Wow, it feels pretty mad writing my penultimate post of this 30 day blog challenge. Today has been the toughest day for me to write something as I've been feeling a bit ropey all day and at this point in time I literally can't breathe from being so blocked up with hay fever so my mind is a little on the sluggish side. Basically I'm warning you incase this blog comes across a bit lackadaisical, as frankly I'd rather be in bed, but so close to the finish line I simply cannot fail and who know's writing about something positive could just give me the boost I need...
A few people have mentioned some subjects for me to cover through this blog series and one that has cropped up a few times that I'm yet to write about is how to fit more things in. It seems lots of you have business ideas that you dream about starting one day but for most there is a hesitation to actually begin. If this includes you then read on and hopefully it will help you get going with it. So you've got an idea or a dream but that's about as far as you've got... it might be because of the fact that you feel life is already super busy and you can't squeeze anymore in, perhaps you don't really know where to start, or it could be that your enthusiasm for the idea has been squashed by others, the negative nellies I like to call them! These people have a lot to answer for and I wouldn't be surprised if they're utterly miserable in their own lives, be it personal, work related or both. The key here is to never take advice from someone that you wouldn't want to trade lives with! Why on earth would you want to listen to anything they've got to say if they've never been happy with the job they're doing and they're telling you that you should do the same instead of realising your dream!! Hmmm, this stinks of jealousy to me! Please step away from these people, phase them out of your life, you do not need influencers like these, trust me!! If you can surround yourself with like minded people you will be in a much better position to move forward with your dream life and with the networking opportunities online these days it's not exactly difficult either. I am a massive fan of Twitter and can guarantee if you use it in the right way you will find heaps of people worth connecting with on and offline. Feel free to follow me (@kaoriking) if you don't already and if you want a hand finding local positive people with similar business or personal goals I'd be more than happy to help where I can.
Ok, so how do you fit more in when you're already so busy and boy aren't we all so 'busy' these days?! It's like a competition over who can be the most overloaded and I'm guilty of this trait too, life is one big juggling act and if we're not physically doing something we're on Facebook or another social media platform watching how busy other people are! This 'busy' doesn't necessarily mean work by the way, it includes every daily task, so socialising, housework, shopping, trips to the library, watching TV, going to the gym etc etc but it all adds to the list of things that might stop us from doing some of the really juicy stuff we want to do but don't have 'time' for!! Ahhh, hang on have I just hit the nail on the head! Are we actually prioritising our lives properly if we don't actually have time to do the one thing that will take us down the path for a dream life? Erm, that will most likely be a no!
So here's a list of things you could do to evaluate how you are prioritising so far:
1) Write down the top five things in your life that are most important to you. So to give you an idea, here are mine:
1) Spending quality time with family and friends
3) Making sure I'm fit and healthy
4) Doing what I love as a job
5) Making a difference somehow
6) Travelling the World
2) Next, prioritise them! (Mine are already in order of importance above)
3) Now work out how much time you spend making each one of these things happen.
4) Now what else do you spend your time doing (so for example, housework, cooking, grocery shopping, clothes shopping, watching TV, hobbies, time on social networking sites)
5) Now work out roughly how much time you spend on each of these things.
I know you can see where I'm going with this now but humour me whilst I get to the end...
6) Can you see where you currently spend time that could be better used if you have a dream you want to realise or a business idea to get cracking with? For example is it more vital for your life that you spend 5 hours per week watching soaps or start planning your business idea?
7) Now, work on using your time more effectively! It's really that easy!
If you have to get up an hour earlier then do it... we don't all need as much sleep as we think we do. I average at around 6 hours and for the first two months of this year I was getting up at 5am to spend an hour doing a few things for myself before anyone else woke up (meditating, goal setting, exercises and a little writing etc), it worked well but I realised I needed a bit more than 4.5 - 5 hours sleep to be effective through the day. I also know some people that survive perfectly well on 4 hours and others who can't focus on less than 8. It's an individual thing and you have to listen to your body but a little time to yourself in the morning is a great way to start your day, particularly if you've got children so try it if you can, you might surprise yourself.
The other thing that works well for me is planning in general. I like to eat well so I cook fresh food from scratch almost every night of the week but it takes a little organisation. I choose the meals ahead and then make a shopping list of the ingredients needed and do my online shop based on these. All in all this process takes a lot less time than it would me driving to the supermarket and doing a shop that way but I have been doing this for years so have it mastered by now. This way I have no panic about what we're eating every evening, we have a good meal and I've saved time in the process!
There are probably loads of other tips I could share but I'll save them for another day as I'm boiling right now and this blog has once again become a lot longer than first intended.
Please feedback to me if you've carried out my exercises above and I'd love to know if you have a new plan because of it.
Now, finally I have a video I would like to share with you that optimises what I am trying to say in this blog. This guy is a legend!!
