Wow, so firstly I've managed to write a blog everyday for a week and I'm pretty pleased with myself as it's been a lot tougher than I thought to think of topics to keep the interest of you lovely lot. After all, in reality to keep you intrigued for the full 30 days the last thing you want to hear is what I had for breakfast, lunch and dinner and what the weather's like, plus if you follow me on any social media channel it's likely you know what I'm eating anyway and we only need to look out of the window to see what the weather's doing. Oh hang on, do we still look out of windows to check the weather these days, or is it a quick squiz at the weather app on our phones before we even draw the curtains?!! Come on, I know I'm not alone in this! #weatherforecastaddictionisarealproblem
Anyway, I digress (as usual!)... so I decided on todays blog theme thanks to a comment that I had on one of my earlier blog posts (thanks Sarah) about a topic idea linked to 'connections' and how my readers are connected to me. I love this, as for one I get to hopefully learn a little more about you, we might all be lucky enough to read some introductions from other readers and best of all we might even learn of some common connections that don't even make sense!! What I mean by this is that totally weird concept when you click on someones Facebook profile that you know and find that you have a friend in common from a totally different time or place in your life. I've had a couple of these incidences, some that I can remember are... a girl in Norfolk who was organising a charity event I was attending who was connected with my cousin who lives in Harrow, who as far as I know may not have even been to Norfolk before! Another was a lady that I am connected with through my business (again based in Norfolk) and she is friends with my Auntie who lives in Bucks! Get out of here, I hear you say! Or perhaps not, perhaps now with these networking sites at our fingertips you too have had these similar head scratching 'no way!' moments as well...
I'm sure lots of you have heard about the Six Degrees of Separation but for those that haven't I'll give you a quick summary, as it is something that has always fascinated me! It is basically a theory that each one of us are a maximum of six connections away from anyone else in the World. It sounds hard to believe doesn't it! So as an example here's a little chain I have devised to illustrate very simply how it could be true...
Me - I'm connected to - My Personal Trainer (let's call him Rob) - Rob is connected to - his Brother (let's call him Jack) - Jack is connected to - his Wife (let's call her Ella) - Ella is connected to - her Cousin (Adele) - Adele is connected to - her best friend (Jane) - Jane is Richard Branson's PA!!
If this was true then with some extensive networking perhaps I could meet work some magic and get to meet Richard Branson! Not to mention that if this were actually true I'd have a personal trainer, yes please!! Something for you to think about might be, who would you most like to find through one of your chain connections and imagine the value of following as many of these trails as you can by just talking to people. The business incentive alone is astounding, so if you've got your own company then be sure to network, network, network!
This theory was originally set out in 1929 by Hungarian author, poet, journalist and translator (an intelligent guy then!) Frigyes Karinthy and then the idea made even more popular following the 1990 play written by John Guare and later made into a film starring Will Smith and Donald Sutherland. Since then Microsoft were also confident enough to say in 2008 that the theory stood up (well almost 6.6 degrees of separation to be exact!) Apparently this was after they checked 30 billion electronic messages... the whole story is here if you want to find out more.
My head spins at this theory, as how can such a massive planet be so well connected? I guess it is true that when you look at the whole Universe actually it's a small World we live in!
So my question to you, my lovely readers, is how are we connected or if you're not sure then how did you find out about this blog? There will be a link somewhere... to make it a bit more fun then those of you that do know me maybe put a little note of how we know each other too or a memory of any time we have spent together...
Can't wait to hear from you!
